Fosterering

Animal fosterers play a vital role in providing care, stability, and support to animals while they wait to find their forever homes. By offering a safe and nurturing environment, fosterers help animals recover, build confidence, and prepare for a successful transition into their new families.

What animals need fostering ?

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Rabbits
  • Guinea Pigs
  • Hamsters
  • Gerbils

Who can foster animals?

Experience of caring for a pet, or previous fostering experience is preferable.  At Wadars, we have procedures and requirements in place to ensure that those who offer fostering facilities are suitable for the animals in question and we will provide you with all the support you will need. What matters most is that they have the dedication, time and commitment to improve the welfare of animals.

Different foster homes offer different areas of expertise, matched to the needs of individual animals.  For example, some animals may be traumatised, elderly or sick and need specialist care.  Others may need a stable environment in which to develop social skills and receive some basic training before they can be considered for re-homing.  Animal fosterers help to observe and evaluate the behaviour and progress of animals they look after to help us make sure the pets are placed where they will fit in and lead happy lives.

Most fostered pets are not suitable for homes where there are young children, or other pets.

Expenses incurred when fostering Wadars animals

Wadars will supply and pay for any animal related expenses, such as veterinary treatment and equipment (i.e. cages), food, etc, however it is essential that the fosterer has their own vehicle to transport the animal to the designated vet when needed.

How Does Animal Fostering Work?

Step 1

You will need to complete a fosterers questionnaire, which can be found below.

Step 2

Please note that we will need to get written landlord consent before the process can begin if you live in rented accommodation.

Step 3

You will have a discussion with a member of the Animal Welfare Team to ensure fostering is right for you, discuss any questions you may have, and complete a home check. We will keep record of the type of animal you are able to take-on (they can be anything from gerbils to dogs).  This is why it’s important that foster homes are carefully checked and approved before animals can be sent to them.

Step 4

You will be invited to complete our fosterer training. This is typically on-site and takes place over a couple of hours.

Step 5

You will be matched with an animal to foster. All fosterers are asked to keep simple records about the animals in their care which can then be passed to new owners. You will be given the relevant paperwork to complete.
