Adopting a WADARS Dog

All WADARS dogs are neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas, ticks and worms, microchipped and come to you with 4 week's free PetPlan Insurance cover.

Our dogs are boarded in different kennels or foster homes, often depending on the type of dog you are hoping for, and it is necessary for you to make an appointment to view them. Please telephone the Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) on 0300 30 30 999 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, to discuss your wishes with him. They will advise you if we have a suitable dog available and where it may be viewed.

Once you have chosen your dog (or, more likely it has chosen you) he or she will be reserved for you while you make an appointment with the ARO for a home check (telephone 0300 30 30 999 - please leave a message if the answering machine is on). Normally the ARO is able to visit you within 2-3 days of receiving your call. The purpose of the check is to discuss dog ownership with you and to ensure that you have made the right decision in adopting a dog. It is also the time when the ARO will discuss with you any special needs of the dog you have chosen. If both you and the ARO are satisfied and the paperwork has been completed, the dog will be released to you and you may visit the kennels or foster home once again to pick up the new member of your family. You must have a proper lead or haltie for the dog.

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER DOG(S) IN YOUR HOME THEY MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED BEFORE A WADARS DOG WILL BE ALLOWED TO LIVE WITH YOU. EVIDENCE OF VACCINATION MUST BE AVAILABLE TO THE ARO ON HIS FIRST VISIT.

After 2-3 weeks the ARO will visit you once again to check all is well and that both the dog and family are happy together.

Although WADARS does not charge a set fee for adopting a dog, on average, it costs WADARS £230 for every dog they take in based on the following charges:
> Veterinary check/Vaccination = £49
> Neutering/Spaying = £112
> Flea/Worming treatment = £10
> Micro-Chipping = £10
> Food & Housing for 1 week = £49
Any donation you may choose to make would be very much appreciated. Please make cheques payable to W.A.D.A.R.S.

It is also the time when the ARO will discuss with you any special needs of the cat you have chosen. If both you and the ARO are satisfied and the paperwork has been completed, the cat will be released to you and you may visit the cattery once again to pick up the new member of your family. You must have a substantial cat carrier for transporting the cat; cardboard carriers are not acceptable.

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER CAT(S) IN YOUR HOME THEY MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST CAT 'FLU' BEFORE A WADARS CAT WILL BE ALLOWED TO LIVE WITH YOU. EVIDENCE OF VACCINATION MUST BE AVAILABLE TO THE ARO ON HIS/HER FIRST VISIT.

All cats going into new homes must be confined to the house for a minimum of 14 days. Windows, doors and cat flaps must be kept closed to prevent escapes. This applies in all weathers and all circumstances (e.g. other resident cats). You should ensure a litter tray is in place before collecting the cat.

Adopting a WADARS Guinea Pig or Rabbit

All WADARS rabbits and guinea pigs are deemed to be healthy and, in the case of rabbits, come to you with their first year vaccination against myxomatosis. New owners will be expected to maintain annual booster injections.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are fostered by carers in Worthing and an appointment can be made to view them. Please telephone the Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) on 0300 30 30 999 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, for further details. Rabbits and guinea pigs are kept in our carers' private homes and gardens and we would ask for your consideration when visiting.

Once you have chosen a rabbit or guinea pig, he or she will be reserved for you while you make an appointment with the ARO for a home check (telephone 0300 30 30 999 - please leave a message if the answering machine is on). Normally the ARO is able to visit you within 2-3 days of receiving your call. The purpose of the check is to discuss rodent ownership with you and to highlight any special needs of your pet. You will also have to demonstrate you have some knowledge about how the animal should be cared for, i.e. feeding, bedding, cleaning etc. If both you and the ARO are satisfied and all paperwork has been completed, you will be the proud owner of a new family member.

You will only be allowed to adopt him/her if you have a fully weather-proofed hutch and run in place before taking him/her home with you. You will need a substantial carrier for transporting the rabbit or guinea pig.

There is no set fee for adopting a rabbit or guinea pig from WADARS but any donation you may choose to make would be very much appreciated. Please make cheques payable to W.A.D.A.R.S.
